Development of a methodology for sanitation and elimination of viruses in babaco buds (Vasconcellea x heilbornii) using in vitro culture of microcuttings

General Objective: Develop a methodology for the elimination of babaco mosaic virus (BabMV) and papaya ringspot (PRSV) in babaco buds, using heat treatments, for the generation of virus-free babaco clonal lines.

Specific objectives

  • Determine the optimal conditions for the in vitro establishment of microcuttings in sterile substrate prior to virus elimination treatment.
  • To evaluate the effect of thermotherapy, alone and in combination with chemotherapy, on the multiplication of the BabMV and PRSV viruses in microcutting buds.
  • Implement an ultra-sensitive molecular detection methodology for BabMV and PRSV viruses from microcutting buds
