Distribution, prevalence and impact of Cactus virus X and Schlumbergeravirus X in commercial pitahaya plantations in Ecuador

General Objective: Determine the prevalence and effect on the production and quality of fruits of the CVX and SchVX viruses in pitahaya crops in Ecuador.

Specific objectives:

  • Determine the incidence, severity and phylogeny of CVX and SchVX viruses in red and yellow pitahaya production areas of the coast, mountains and Amazonia.
  • Compare production parameters and fruit quality between plants infected with CVX and SchVX and virus-free plants.
  • Determine the effectiveness of two disinfectant products in reducing mechanical spread of CVX and SchVX through pruning tools.
