Main topic: Experience in the La Serena School of Data Science 2021 program
• Please help us with your full name and tell us what you are studying and what you are specializing in at the Institution you represent
My name is Anthony Myron Vizcaíno Rojas, I am studying the last semester of my Physics degree at Yachay Tech University in Ecuador . I am doing my degree work on computational simulations of nanomaterials that have applications in industry.
• for CEDIA to know that you have been awarded a scholarship to participate in the "Escuela La Serena Ciencia de Datos 2021". Could you tell us about the program and your experience in it?
The La Serena Data Science School 2021 was a two-week program focused on data analysis tools and techniques, which had the participation of great scientists in areas such as Astrophysics, Computing, Medicine, among others. My experience in this program was very rewarding because I learned several data analysis techniques; since my career is scientific. One of the things that we must know is not only to take measurements but also to interpret them to know what has been investigated; I think that all the knowledge learned in this program will be very helpful in my professional future. In addition, I met international students who were studying different levels such as Master's or Doctorate; When talking with them they inspired me to continue studying until I get a fourth level degree and if it is possible to carry out a research project in which people of different nationalities can participate or with the scientists who appeared in this program.
• What would you highlight most about this program?
What I liked the most was the multidisciplinary approach that the program had, since we learned to analyze different types of data and also to close the course we presented a task that we carried out among science students with different specializations. It was very good to have different points of view since we presented several ways of carrying out the tasks and finally together we were able to align these ideas to complete the work successfully. There were even students who participated in previous editions and were now part of the University of La Serena and were helping to carry out the event as teaching assistants. It seemed like an excellent opportunity to opt for a postgraduate degree at the University of La Serena.
• Would you recommend students to participate in the next scholarships of the program? Because? I would recommend it without a doubt because Ecuadorian students have enough capacity to prepare ourselves academically/scientifically at an international level and show that we too are capable of doing great things.
A scholarship or internship opportunity is very good because it serves to improve our knowledge and opens up study or work opportunities abroad; with which we are expanding the network of collaboration with other parts of the world.
In addition, obtaining a scholarship contributes a lot to the personal curriculum, which at the time of applying for a postgraduate degree is highly appreciated by the selection committee.
• How do you consider that CEDIA contributed to technological/educational development in Ecuador and through this relationship?
I believe that CEDIA is doing a great job by focusing on improving the quality of Ecuadorian students and the initiative to sponsor internship/study programs seems to me to be a significant motivation for students since sometimes we do not opt for a program when it requires of a payment and we lose valuable opportunities; but if we have the support of institutions like CEDIA to help us in this aspect, we can make the most of these programs and learn new skills that allow us to contribute to the technological development of our country.
• In a few words, what does CEDIA for you and the academic community?
For me CEDIA represents a fundamental pillar of Ecuadorian education and research, since it has various services that support the scientific/technological development of our society, and has been very helpful to Ecuadorians, even more so in times of pandemic.
Thank you always for your kind and great contribution to our academic and reading community.
