Main topic: Experience in the Data Science School program La Serena 2021
• Please provide your full name and tell us what you are studying and your specialization at the institution you represent.
My name is Anthony Myron Vizcaíno Rojas, and I am currently in my final semester of Physics at Yachay Tech University in Ecuador. I am working on my thesis project, which focuses on computer simulations of nanomaterials with industrial applications.
• CEDIA CEDIA learn that you have been awarded a scholarship to participate in the “La Serena Data Science School 2021.” Could you tell us about the program and your experience there?
The La Serena Data Science School 2021 was a two-week program focused on data analysis tools and techniques, featuring the participation of leading scientists in fields such as astrophysics, computer science, and medicine, among others. My experience in this program was very rewarding because I learned several data analysis techniques, as my field is science. One of the things we must know is not only to take measurements but also to interpret them to understand what has been researched; I think all the knowledge I gained in this program will be very helpful in my future career. Furthermore, I met international students at various levels, such as Master's and Doctoral programs; talking with them inspired me to continue studying until I obtain a postgraduate degree and, if possible, to carry out a research project in which we can collaborate with people from different nationalities or with the scientists who participated in this program.
What would you highlight most about this program?
What I liked most was the program's multidisciplinary approach. We learned to analyze different types of data, and to conclude the course, we presented a project that we completed collaboratively with science students from various specializations. It was very beneficial to have different perspectives, as we presented several ways to approach the tasks, and ultimately, we were all able to align these ideas to successfully complete the project. Some students who had participated in previous editions were now part of the University of La Serena and were helping to organize the event as teaching assistants. I thought it was an excellent opportunity to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of La Serena.
• Would you recommend that students participate in the program's upcoming scholarships? Why? I would definitely recommend it because Ecuadorian students have the capacity to prepare themselves academically and scientifically at an international level and demonstrate that we too are capable of achieving great things.
A scholarship or internship opportunity is very good because it helps improve our knowledge and opens up opportunities for study or work abroad; thus expanding our network of collaboration with other parts of the world.
Furthermore, obtaining a scholarship greatly enhances one's resume, which is highly valued by the selection committee when applying for postgraduate studies.
• How do you believe CEDIA has contributed to technological/educational development in Ecuador through this partnership?
I believe CEDIACEDIACEDIA CEDIACEDIACEDIACEDIA CEDIACEDIA that help us in this regard, we can take full advantage of these programs and learn new skills that allow us to contribute to the technological development of our country.
• In a few words, what does CEDIA for you and the academic community?
For me, CEDIA represents a fundamental pillar of Ecuadorian education and research, as it has several services that support the scientific/technological development of our society, and it has been of great help to Ecuadorians, even more so during times of pandemic.
Thank you always for your kind and great contribution to our academic and reading community
