The discussion addressed three key areas: regulatory, academic, and professional.
Personal data protection returned to the forefront of academic and technical debate in Cuenca during the discussion "Weaknesses and Opportunities in Personal Data Protection in Ecuador," organized by the Information Security area and the Personal Data Protection Coordination of CEDIA, in partnership with the Catholic University of Cuenca.
The event brought together three key voices: Manuel Jacho Chávez, acting superintendent and general director of Personal Data Protection Regulation; Leocadio Marrero Trujillo, professor and researcher specializing in digital ethics; and Iván Ancco Peña, expert in management and regulatory compliance. Drawing on their diverse backgrounds—regulatory, academic, and professional—they offered a broad perspective on the challenges Ecuador faces in consolidating a responsible and sustainable data protection model.
Among the topics addressed were the gaps in the implementation of current regulations, the need to strengthen institutional capacities in universities and public entities, and the role of citizens in building a culture of shared responsibility in information management. The panelists agreed that strengthening digital trust will be crucial for the development of technological projects, research, and the adoption of new data-driven tools.
