HOLISTIC PLANNING OF THE EXPANSION OF THE ELECTRICAL TRANSMISSION SYSTEM CONSIDERING NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND UNCERTAINTY.

General Objective: Formulate and propose a solution algorithm, based on the alternating current (AC) model, to the multi-stage planning problem for the expansion of transmission systems considering technologies related to HVDC's, Storage Systems, Multi-Systems. voltage, with uncertainty.

Specific objectives:

  • Include HVDC systems, storage systems, and multi-voltage systems in the multi-stage formulation of the planning model, using the alternating current (AC) transmission network model.
  • Consider in the problem a computationally tractable way to model uncertainty. This means using methods such as Monte Carlo, Latin Hipercube, MinMax for the worst case scenario, etc. All of these methods would require, for the problem to be treated, a high computational power that would be possible to achieve with the use of the supercomputing infrastructure of CEDIA and the University of Cuenca. Furthermore, uncertainty will be considered mainly in generation sources and demand.
  • Deepen the use of iterative greedy algorithms to solve the problem. Greedy algorithms, also known as Greddy, are heuristic algorithms that can be specialized with “intelligent” methods to solve the problem at hand.
  • Use test systems and the real Ecuadorian system to obtain the results. Normally in the literature, for comparison purposes, standard test systems are used for the planning problem, such as the Garver system, the 24-node IEEE system, the 118-node IEEE system. The objective of this proposal is also to use the Ecuadorian transmission system, which has more transmission circuits than those previously mentioned systems, which makes the problem computationally very demanding.
