PI figures for 2023 and the importance of management for HEIs

This is an article with educational information about Intellectual Property.

The management of intellectual property in HEIs is necessary to make their participation in the educational market visible, as well as to protect the results of applied research and reinforce the extension components and links with society and the company.

Thus, the intellectual and industrial property regime is essential to manage knowledge. The more applied research results are protected within the Ecuadorian territory, the greater the contribution to the innovation ecosystem.

Without support from those knowledgeable about the intellectual property regime, all applied research results would be limited to being cited from bibliographic collections. That is why CEDIA seeks to consolidate researchers' deep knowledge of the intellectual property regime so that little by little their research is fed with cutting-edge documents.

On the other hand, the administrative staff of HEIs must ensure the prestige of their institutions, appropriately requesting the protection of intangible assets derived from the management of a higher education institution.
During 2023, CEDIA provided technical and financial support to several member HEIs, managing several projects through the different funds and on-demand services that the Corporation offers to Higher Education Institutions.

Likewise, it monitors the monthly publications of the SENADI Intellectual Property Gazette, with the purpose of collecting public data on intellectual property applications from all Universities.

Among these data, it stands out that a Colombian university filed a PCT application in Ecuador, reflecting interest in the commercialization of its research in the country and recognizing the improvement in the search for foreign patent documents, from Ecuadorian companies and researchers through freedom of operation reports. .

On the other hand, applications from 26 national universities were published corresponding to trademarks, patents, utility models and industrial designs. It should be noted that 22 of these universities are members of CEDIA .

Among the applications from national universities, it is found that during 2023, 171 applications for trademark registration were published in the Gazette; seven patent applications; six Utility Model applications; and four applications for Industrial Design.

If this information is of interest to you, we invite you to contact the intellectual property area of CEDIA so that this report can be displayed at your University.
