Study of the Electromagnetic fields that accompany the seismic and volcanic activity in the Chiles and Reventador volcanic complexes

General Objective: Establish the possible relationship between changes in electromagnetic fields and the premonitory activity of volcanic eruptions, through the study and measurement of existing electromagnetic radiation levels when there is seismic and/or volcanic activity.

Specific objectives

  • Develop and implement a magnetometric system that makes available magnetic field data for correlational analysis with measurements of seismic activity, geopositioning information in the Chiles and Reventador volcanic complexes.
  • Develop a low-cost wireless communication system and insert it into the electromagnetic system for the transmission of digitized signals to a central station.
  • Validate a mathematical model with the data generated by the magnetometric system developed to study the premonitory signals that magma sources possibly generate in an active volcanic complex.
  • Correlate the data obtained from the magnetic field, seismic activity, geopositioning information and inclinometry in the Chiles and Reventador volcanic complexes to obtain conclusions regarding the premonitory activity in active volcanoes, which will help to gain valuable time in early and accurate prediction in eruptive processes.
