“TherapyBuddy”: Reinventing Geriatric and Childhood Rehabilitation through Emotionally Intelligent Robots

General Objective: Design a robotic hospital accompaniment system focused on the socio-affective needs of children and older adults during their rehabilitation in hospitals and clinics of the Ecuadorian public and private Health network, to mitigate stress levels and social isolation. , promoting resilience and efficient recovery, through emotionally intelligent verbal and gestural interactions.

Specific objectives:

  • Develop an exhaustive study on the current circumstances and needs of hospitalized children and older adults, for the development of strategies focused on improving the quality of their hospital stay that allow the mitigation of psychological and emotional repercussions in the short and long term, to through robotic technologies.
  • Design a robotic companion with a software architecture with artificial intelligence specialized in reducing stress and social isolation to contribute to a more pleasant and efficient hospitalization during the rehabilitation of children and older adults.
  • Test and evaluate the performance of the robot in reducing stress and anxiety levels in children and older adults, with the application of evaluation instruments to the different actors who will use the robotic platform. To determine the efficiency of this technology, interviews, surveys, and the collection of audiovisual material will be carried out that can
later be analyzed by psychologists and related professionals.
  • Carry out an online training program (MOOC) for the dissemination of technological advances and benefits of the implementation of robotic systems in the hospital context, educating the general public and training health professionals in the introduction of new robotic health technologies, also pointing out in the configuration and appropriate use of the medical accompaniment robot developed in this research.
  • Integrate other CEDIA member institutions that are interested in promoting research that integrates technological, medical and social approaches in their respective institutions, holding meetings and workshops for their teachers and researchers, in addition to participating in national and international conferences, in order for it to be a problem of common interest in the Ecuadorian scientific and academic community, with the publication of research articles.
