Frequently Asked Questions

The total amount financed by the fund is up to US$6,000.00 per application.

The fund will be used solely to cover the costs of professional services and fees for Intellectual Property (IP) registrations and applications . Professional services for preparing and filing registrations will be contracted from CEDIA and selected by CEDIA based on the nature of each application.

In the case of inventions, remember that the highest costs are linked to the legal and technical costs of efficiently preparing the patent application document (to make it attractive to the intellectual property market). This cost will be covered by the fund.

Yes, the fund can finance this process up to US$6,000.00. Applicants may provide matching funds if the cost to achieve the desired results exceeds this amount.

No, under no circumstances is the value transferred to the applicants; the resources will be managed at all times by CEDIA , and what will be given to the applicants is the proof of registration or the application according to the type of intellectual property category for which the amount has been awarded.

This assignment of rights is from the inventors/creators to the organization for which it was generated (university or company, as the case may be). This document is important for managing the application or registration of intellectual property rights.

CEDIA does not request any benefit in relation to the intellectual property rights of the application and clarifies that the rights holders may reach private agreements on the economic matters related to the creation, and may agree on royalties.

CEDIA aims to improve practices for protecting research results with transfer potential and therefore provides incentives to its members for this purpose. Furthermore, it makes internationally experienced experts available to advise on and prepare the necessary documentation (along with its researchers and university intellectual property managers), thus strengthening the national capacities of its members.

Universities , in turn, gain funding and expertise in intellectual property management and knowledge transfer, enabling them to improve their performance indicators in these areas.

Researchers , for their part, will have the opportunity to protect their research results and learn in the process alongside a high-level legal and technical team. It is important to note that inventors
will retain their legally mandated rights.

We would like to point out that applications to the Fund are not only for patents; you can also apply for:

  • a) Copyright , includes literary, artistic or scientific works, as well as software or databases, provided that their registration is required to be delivered to third parties for distribution to society with or without commercial purposes;
  • b) Inventions (includes utility models and patents) with the clear determination of a problem and technical solution;
  • c) Industrial designs ;
  • d) Trade Secrets ;
  • e) Distinctive signs to protect a transferable product or development when their protection is necessary to accompany the distribution of a generated product or development, which may or may not be protected by other categories of intellectual property; and,
  • f) Plant Breeding .

Furthermore, it is possible to request protection for more than one category in a single application. Experts will review the appropriateness of such applications.

Applications are evaluated using a rubric by three specialists with experience in intellectual property protection and management,
