Evaluation system for seasonal climate forecast in Ecuador

General Objective: Develop an automatic climate forecast evaluation system using source computer code for evaluation/verification of large volumes of data based on online code (streamline code) and optimized for high performance computing.

Specific objectives

  • Build a meteorological database (precipitation and temperature) for deterministic and probabilistic verification of outputs from forecast climate models. This database will be developed jointly between IES 1, 2 and 3.
  • Develop a stand-alone routine that integrates conversion of climatic data in original format to spatial data; and calculate deterministic and probabilistic metrics. The development of this tool will be led by IES1 in coordination with IES 2 and 3.
  • To evaluate the abilities of the seasonal prediction model (5th generation) of the European Center for Midrange Weather Prediction to reproduce surface meteorological variables over the Equator. The applied research using the developed tool will be carried out jointly between IES 1, 2 and 3.
