School research and climate action: An intercultural dialogue of knowledge

General Objective: Promote school research on climate change at the Higher Basic levels of rural educational units as a mechanism to strengthen environmental education and the social appropriation of science and local knowledge, through interdisciplinary teaching methodologies, in the communities. “Monte Sinaí” educational schools in the community of Sigsigcocha (Santa Ana Parish) and in the “29 de Julio” Basic General Education school in the community of Totorillas (Tarqui Parish) in Azuay; Inter-Andean Interculturality Educational Unit (San Juan Parish), Once de Noviembre Educational Unit (San Andrés Parish) in Chimborazo; and in the “Prócer José Cuero y Caicedo” Educational Unit (San Isidro parish center) and CECIB of Basic Education “Ciudad de Macas”, (Sevilla Don Bosco Parish) in Morona Santiago, during the period 2023 and 2025.

Specific objectives:

  • Identify what and how climate change and environmental education is taught and how it is evaluated through a bibliographic review of educational curricula (and other binding texts) and dialogue with educational communities.
  • Activate intercultural dialogue between community knowledge and scientific knowledge around environmental education and climate change through participatory PAR methodologies in which educational communities, researchers and community actors participate.
  • Establish guidelines that promote school research on climate change through the systematization and construction of teaching resources based on climate change and interactions with local ancestral knowledge and its respective interculturality to apply in educational practice.
  • Incorporate teaching resources into educational practice through a pilot model.
