Development of a toxicological testing platform in zebrafish (Danio rerio) for the discovery of new environmental contaminants, for the evaluation of water quality and to measure the effectiveness of decontamination treatments

General Objective: Develop a toxicological testing platform in zebrafish (Danio rerio) for the discovery of new environmental contaminants, the evaluation of water quality and the measurement of the effectiveness of decontamination treatments.

Specific objectives:

  • Standardize toxicology and teratogenicity assays in zebrafish embryos and larvae using contaminants such as xanthates, cytostatic drugs (azathioprine) and synthetic leachates.
  • Analytically evaluate the degradation and mineralization of the cytostatic drug azathioprine dissolved in water by application of the heterogeneous Fenton and H2O2/UVC advanced oxidation processes, separately and in combination.
  • To evaluate the toxicity and teratogenicity of the residuals of azathioprine degradation after advanced oxidation heterogeneous Fenton and H2O2/UVC, separately and combined, using zebrafish embryos and larvae as a model.
  • Analytically evaluate the removal of the contaminant load from a synthetic leachate by applying a photocatalytic process with TiO2 (anatase) deposited on sand and UVC radiation.
  • To evaluate the toxicity and teratogenicity of the results after the removal of the contaminating load of leachate by application of a photocatalytic process with TiO2 deposited on sand and UVC radiation, using zebrafish embryos and larvae as a model.
